The first Friday the 13th gave horror fans Camp Crystal Lake, Pamela Voorhees and one seriously unpleasant summer job. One year later, somebody decided it was safe to train a whole new batch of counselors right next door.
Terrible idea. Great sequel.
Friday the 13th Part 2 is where Jason Voorhees finally steps out of the campfire story and becomes the killer we came to see. No hockey mask yet. This Jason wears a dirty sack over his head, swings a mean pickaxe and feels less like an unstoppable movie monster than some wild man who has been living in the woods far too long.
Steve Miner keeps everything lean and mean. The counselors drink, flirt, wander off alone and generally make the kind of decisions required to keep a Crystal Lake movie moving. Meanwhile, Jason stalks through the darkness with none of the supernatural baggage the later sequels would pile onto him.
And then there’s Amy Steel as Ginny Field. Instead of simply outrunning Jason, Ginny pays attention to the story behind him and figures out that surviving this particular maniac might require getting inside his head. That makes her one of the smartest final girls of the entire slasher era.
If the original opened the gates to Crystal Lake, Part 2 is where the franchise really starts becoming Friday the 13th. Jason has arrived. The counselors are doomed. And his killing spree is only getting started, as Friday the 13th Part III would prove one year later.

Fun Fact: Jason’s sack-mask look was inspired by the killer in the 1976 film The Town That Dreaded Sundown. The hockey mask that would define Jason wouldn’t arrive until Friday the 13th Part III.
Extra Trivia: Warrington Gillette is credited as Jason, but stuntman Steve Daskawisz performed much of Jason’s masked action throughout the movie. Gillette primarily appears during the climactic unmasked scenes.
Legacy: Friday the 13th Part 2 made the decision that changed the franchise forever: Jason became the killer. Why Friday the 13th Part 2 Is Worth Renting
Before Jason became the walking tank of the later sequels, he was faster, scruffier and much more human. Sackhead Jason looks like something that genuinely crawled out of the woods, and that rough-around-the-edges quality gives Part 2 a nastiness the later movies can’t quite duplicate.
Ginny Field Understands the Assignment
Amy Steel’s Ginny doesn’t survive because Jason suddenly forgets how doors work. She listens to his story, recognizes the importance of Pamela Voorhees and uses Jason’s obsession with his mother against him. It’s exactly why she ranks near the top when we rank every final girl in the Friday the 13th franchise. Running is useful. Outsmarting the man with the pickaxe is better.
Crystal Lake Finds Its Formula
The original movie created the campground nightmare, but Part 2 locks the franchise formula into place: counselors, woods, sex, bad decisions, inventive kills and Jason lurking somewhere nearby. Harry Manfredini’s score brings back that familiar Crystal Lake pulse, and Steve Miner keeps the whole rental moving without wasting much time.
Rewind or Fast Forward?
Rewind. Absolutely. Friday the 13th Part 2 gives us Jason’s first full outing, one of the franchise’s best final girls and a stripped-down Crystal Lake atmosphere that still works beautifully. The hockey mask gets all the merchandise, but Sackhead Jason deserves some respect.
