After making his debut as Crystal Lake’s killer in Friday the 13th Part 2, Jason Voorhees returns with a new group of victims in his sights. This is also the movie where he finally picks up the hockey mask that would become one of the most recognizable images in horror history. It’s hard to imagine the franchise without it, yet Jason spent his first movie hiding behind burlap.
This time, a new group of friends heads to Higgins Haven for what should be a relaxing weekend near Crystal Lake. Predictably, Jason has other plans. Between biker gangs, practical jokes, awkward romances, and an alarming number of people wandering off alone, the body count begins climbing almost immediately.
I probably rented this one more than any other entry in the series growing up. Sure, Part VI might be my favorite, but Part 3 always felt like peak VHS Jason. Once that hockey mask appears, horror history changes forever.
Throw in cheesy 3D gimmicks, memorable kills, and Richard Brooker’s imposing performance as Jason, and you’ve got one of the defining slashers of the entire VHS era.
Dana Kimmell also gives the movie one of the franchise’s tougher survivors in Chris Higgins. She doesn’t just spend the finale running from Jason; she fights back hard, which earned her a strong spot when we ranked every Friday the 13th final girl from worst to best.

Why Friday the 13th Part 3 Is Worth Renting
This is the movie that transforms Jason from another slasher villain into a pop-culture icon. Richard Brooker gives Jason a physical presence that feels both intimidating and strangely athletic, while Steve Miner keeps the pace moving from one inventive kill to the next.
The original 3D presentation leads to plenty of goofy moments, but they’re part of the charm today. Spears, pitchforks, and flying objects constantly leap toward the camera in the most wonderfully ’80s way possible.
Most importantly, this is where Jason becomes the Jason everyone recognizes. Once that hockey mask goes on, there’s no going back.
