Some horror sequels ease viewers back into familiar territory. Phantasm II (1988) kicks open the mausoleum doors, loads the hearse with weapons, and sends Mike and Reggie straight into battle with the Tall Man.

I was almost three years old when the original Phantasm reached theaters. By the time the sequel arrived, I had just turned twelve, and this was actually my introduction to the strange world of silver spheres, hooded dwarfs, deserted cemeteries, and impossible hallways.

That may be why I have always had such a soft spot for it. While longtime fans sometimes prefer the eerie, dreamlike mystery of the original, Phantasm II was bigger, faster, gorier, and built like a supernatural road movie.

Mike and Reggie travel from town to town following the destruction left behind by the Tall Man. Their journey takes them through abandoned funeral homes, ruined cemeteries, and small communities that feel as though every living soul has already been harvested.

Don Coscarelli keeps the franchise’s strange mythology intact while giving the sequel enough firepower, practical effects, and chainsaw mayhem to stand beside the most entertaining horror follow-ups of the VHS era.
