“Your luck just ran out.”
Released in 1993, Leprechaun arrived after the golden age of slashers had begun to fade, but it managed to carve out its own strange place in horror history. Instead of a masked killer or supernatural boogeyman, audiences got a wisecracking mythical creature with razor-sharp teeth, magical powers, and an unhealthy obsession with gold.
Dan O’Grady thought he had pulled off the score of a lifetime when he stole a pot of gold from a leprechaun in Ireland. Unfortunately, the creature followed him home. Years later, a group of unsuspecting newcomers accidentally unleash the vengeful little monster and discover just how far he’ll go to reclaim his treasure.
Much of the film’s appeal comes from Warwick Davis, who fully commits to the role and transforms the Leprechaun into one of horror’s most unique villains. Equal parts funny, creepy, and completely unhinged, his performance helped turn what could have been a forgettable monster movie into a long-running franchise.
The movie is also famous for featuring an early performance by Jennifer Aniston before she became a household name. Combined with the film’s oddball humor, practical creature effects, and memorable one-liners, Leprechaun became a staple of video store shelves throughout the 1990s.
